Arlington, TX – Your Seguin Cougars reported to fall camp Monday with high expectations for the 2018 season, with sights set on Lakeview Centennial for a Thursday night, August 30, season opener. The offense brings in former John Tyler High Offensive Coordinator Will Blaylock. “I’m excited to see the offense Coach Blaylock brings to us–a new high octane offensive that will put fans in the seats,” said Head Coach Joe Gordon. “We are excited to see what he brings to table. We are headed in the right direction. I’ve seen the growth both physical and mentally of our players. Our players’ mindset is where we want it to be, and with a 9-team district and facing two state champs, we needed that growth mindset.”
On defense Seguin brings back an experienced linebacker corps and secondary. Out of those eight spots, seven are returning letterman, with Maurice Okello heading up the linebackers and 3-year letterman Mykelti Carelock spearheading the secondary. On the offensive side of the ball, sophomore Xavier Gordon will be taking over reins at quarterback, with fellow sophomore running back Jalen March spotlighted in the backfield with him. “Anytime you can get two sophomores to set the stage and lead, you are building a bright future!” Coach Gordon said.
The Cougars kick off their preseason schedule facing defending 4A state champ Texarkana Pleasant Grove High School. “It’s a great opportunity to the hit the ground running. Anytime you get to face a team like Pleasant Grove, and they’ve got a great coach in Coach Gibson, it’s a great day to get better heading into the season,” stated Coach Gordon praising Pleasant Grove’s program. The Cougars will meet Pleasant Grove August 18 at 6 p.m. in Royce City. The following weekend the Cougars will take part in a 3-way scrimmage with Crowley High and Sam Houston High (time and date to be announced). Go Cougs!
