Arlington TX – Friday night was Seguin’s 2017 Homecoming game against Cleburne, and it started with a bang. On the third play from scrimmage, senior quarterback Jorge Barrera exploded for a 73-yard run that sent the sideline and the home crowd into a frenzy. The Cougars never looked back.
The Cougar defense forced nine turnovers, recovering four of them and picking up two and returning them for touchdowns. Linebacker Maurice Okello returned one for four yards for a score, and on Cleburne’s very next play Defensive Lineman Nolan Daggs returned a recovery 46 yards for the touchdown. Jorge Baerra added another rushing touchdown, and the Cougs held off a late Cleburne surge to win their first district game of the year 30-16.
Friday night’s victory also was Head Coach Joe Gordon’s first district victory. “It feels great. You only get one first district win. I’m surrounded by great coaches, and it just feels great–definitely something I’ll remember.”
With playoff hopes still alive, the team is looking forward to this week’s game against Crowley. “It’s going to be tough–they’re a good team, commented. Gordon on Friday night’s match up. “If we come out and execute, don’t put the ball on the ground, and play the way we are capable of playing, it’s going to be a dog fight, but I believe in our players.”
Seguin will travel to Crowley for a 7:30 kick off this Friday night, Oct. 27. Come out and support your Seguin Cougars!
